Has the Hilary J. Farias Date Rape Prevention Act passed, and when it does, what will be the status of 1,4-butanediol?
Q: Wondering if the Hilary Farias date-rape drug prohibition bill has been signed by the president yet? And if so is 1,4-butanediol included as a class I chemical along with gamma-butyrolactone.
A: The bill was signed into law by the president on Friday Feb 18, 2000. See the GHB law page .
As the bill is currently worded, 1,4-butanediol along with gamma-butyrlactone will become Class I chemicals. This is not the same as a schedule I substance, which is what GHB will become. We are not lawyers, but our understanding is that sales of large quantities of 1,4-B will be regulated, requiring paperwork ...meaning that most chemical supply houses will not sell it to anyone without affiliation with legitimate laboratories. But it is also our understanding that it will not be illegal to sell small quantities to the public and it will not be illegal to purchase or possess it.
