Would chewing phalaris grass seeds cause an effect?
Q: I am curious as to whether or not the effects of the dmt contained in the phalaris plant would be felt by simply chewing the seeds?

How many seeds would be necessary to achieve an effect? How many seeds would be too much or would possible provide adverse or extremely intense effects? Is it similiar to the effects of chewing and swallowing Syrian Rue seeds? Which of the two is more potent and would work better by that method?
Should the seeds be swallowed after thourouhly chewing? How long should they be chewed?
Sorry for the 20 questions-in-one thing.

Thank you for your time and I would like to say that erowid.org is an unparralelled and indespensible resource to many people.

Sincerely,

Rob

A: There are two main parts to the answer. First, we have seen no references to Phalaris grass seeds containing DMT. Various parts of the plant contain different percentages of DMT but at this point it seems that the seeds do not. Second, even if the seeds did contain DMT an MAOI would still need to be used in conjunction as DMT is not orally active by itself.

Syrian Rue contains harmine/harmaline which are MAOIs. It does not contain DMT. It is most commonly used in combination with a DMT containing plant in order to make the DMT orally active. Harmine/harmaline do have their own effects at high enough doses, but it is frequently accompanied by nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. The effects of DMT and Harmine/Harmaline are quite different.

Your question mentions chewing Syrian Rue seeds, as far as we know, very few people (if any) use this method. Syrian Rue is generally ground and encapsulated or processed with a simple water extraction. They taste very bad. :)
