Is there cocaine in capsules marked "ST-3 224 3850"?
Q: There is a type of speed in our town that is supposedly a mixture of ephedrine and cocaine. It has come in a few different capsules, but the most common is a pink and purple one that has "ST-3 224/3850" on it. I'm sure it's possible that the capsules could have been emptied and re-filled with speed mixture. I'm wondering if you know if they really are a mix of coke and ephedrine, and if not then what?

A: According to the Ident-A-Drug Reference, a pink and purple capsule marked with "ST-3 224 3850" is a supplement produced by NVE Pharmaceutical which contains Ephedra, White Willow Bark, Grapefruit, Kola Nut, and Chitosan. There is no cocaine in these capsules unless they have been adulterated after leaving the production facility (very unlikely on any large scale). This should be relatively easy to determine as many labelled pharmaceutical capsules have a band which seals the capsule closed. If there is such a band on the capsules you've seen, then there's no cocaine inside. The lack of such a band doesn't mean the capsules have been adulterated or that they contain cocaine, just that you can't be 100% sure that they haven't been adulterated.

The likelihood that capsules such as these have been hand opened and refilled with a cocaine/ephedra mixture is quite low. People who have cocaine to sell rarely mix it with something like ephedra and put it in capsules. It would be much easier to simply sell the cocaine alone. On the other hand, there's obviously an incentive to buy capsules containing milder stimulants such as ephedra and claim that they contain cocaine when selling them. Chances are very good that the capsules are simply the original supplement containing the herbs listed above.
