Do reactions to 5-MeO-DMT really vary THAT much?
Q: I am interested in exploring the effects of 5-MeO-DMT. I have read mixed reports with one person smoking 40mg and having fun while another smoked 8mg and woke up under a desk covered in puke with the phone laying on the floor next to him. I know that some of this has to be bogus, or does it vary that much from person to person?

I have lots of experience with LSD and psylocybin, but have never tried DMT. I can easily take up to 9 grams of shrooms and about 10 hits of acid. Do these tolerance levels have anything to do with 5-MeO-DMT tolerance?

A: Yes, reactions DO vary that much. There is absolutely no question of that. If there is one thing we have learned while running Erowid, it is that individual reaction to identical doses of identical material can and do vary dramatically. I have personally witnessed an individual who was blown away by 3 mg smoked 5-MeO-DMT, while others find 30-40 mg or more an enjoyable experience.

While there appears to be some correlation between what dosage of various materials an individual requires, being able to handle (or liking) large doses of one substance definitely doesn't mean you can assume the same will hold true for another (even similar) substance. Each drug is unique, and even slight differences in molecular structure can change the way the body handles it. While Joe may be able to handle every other psychedelic known to man, it's possible to lack a specific enzyme that helps process a particular substance and so he could end up being super-sensitive to that one. Or he may have lots of that enzyme and require much larger doses. At this point there's no practical way to know beforehand. Variations in both material and routes of administration make predictions hard to come by.

Many people address this issue by starting with low doses and working up. A tiny difference in dose can make a major difference with this drug. With 5-MeO-DMT, one reported technique for reducing the risk of overdose is to start with 2 mg and work up in 2 mg increments. It's uncommon for someone to need more than 10-12mg for a moderately strong trip, though it does happen.

As to how much you can handle, you can worry about figuring out your upper dose after you've gotten familiar with the drug. Be warned that too much 5-MeO-DMT can be profoundly unpleasant, so don't try to be macho.
