Can dimethyltryptamine be synthesized from 5-hydroxyl L-tryptamine?
Q: I was wondering if a procedure was known to synthesize dimethyltryptamine using 5-hydroxyl L-tryptamine?

A: This does not seem like a very feasable route. There are various methods for the methylation of the amine to produce the dimethylamine from the tryptamine. However, in this case you would also need to dehydrate (remove the hydroxy) from the aromatic ring, and I suspect the conditions for this may be too reactive for the rest of the structure. If one started with 4-hydroxytryptamine, it may be possible to methylate the amine and get psilocin.
