What herbs or substances can help with heroin detox?
Q: Is there any substance, (herb, drug etc.) preferably legal, but info on illegal is welcome, that eases the pain of heroin withdrawl? I have been using daily for about 4 months. I want to avoid professionals and just get free. Unfortunately, cold turkey hurts so much (and is molecular suicide according to a vault article), and tapering off has proven unsuccessful. Something that would keep the freak out at bay is what I am looking for.

I have read about ibogaine, but even after about 5 hours on line trying to flesh out the information, I wasn't able to ascertain if it is legal in the US. I also read about GHB use in heroin withdrawl, but again, unclear as to the legality of this substance or even what it is exactly. I have searched the vaults and the information on both these substances was not enough for me to go forward.

Please answer soon with as much information as possible. I want to get this dark episode of my life over with and regain control over my destiny. It is amazing that smart people can make such stupid choices!

Thank you for your answer and thank you for this website!

Nancy

A: As you mention in your question, Ibogaine is probably the most commonly discussed herbal possibility for helping detox from heroin. It is a powerful hallucinogen which seems to block the effects of withdrawal. Unfortunately, it is illegal (schedule I) in the United States. A good place to find more information about ibogaine is the ibogaine mailing list. You can find information about how to join at :

http://www.ibogaine.Desk.nl/mailinglist.html

The use of ibogaine is not to be taken lightly. It is a powerful hallucinogen and has been implicated in a small handful of deaths.

Some people have suggested that GHB could be useful tool in reducing the withdrawal symptoms, but this is completely hypothetical. We have very little info on the actual efficacy of this process. GHB is _not_ currently federally illegal in the U.S., but is expected to become scheduled within the next month or two. It is illegal in perhaps 1/2 of the states. Info on specific state's status can be found at :

Again, before even beginning to contemplate using GHB, read and learn as much as possible about it's use and dangers. It too has caused or been implicated in a couple dozen deaths over the past few years.

Unfortunately, we are not experts in the field of heroin detox. Our best advice is that if you can't figure out how to get off on your own...seek help. If you live anywhere near a city, you should be able to find a discrete treatment center to help. We wish you all the best.
