“On the neurotoxicity of MDMA and related amphetamine derivatives [letter]”.
J Clin Psychopharmacol. 1995;15(4):295-6.
Abstract
As the popularity of MDMA has increased, so has knowledge regarding its potential untoward effects. A series of MDMA-related fatalities have been reported, but these are exceedingly rare. In 1991, two individuals were described in your journal who developed chronic neuropsychiatric syndromes after the ingestion of large doses of MDMA. Since then, MDMA has been further implicated in a number of acute and chronic neuropsychiatric illnesses, ranging from psychosis to panic disorder with secondary depression. However, these too are uncommon and appear to be most likely to occur in individuals with past histories of psychiatric illness, and after high doses of MDMA.
