LSD over-dosage in rabbits elicits objective toxic changes, similar to those seen in human beings with "pernicious catatonia". Similar toxic symptoms can be produced in rabbits by pyrogens derived from gram- negative bacteria. The syndrome is one of central sympathetic stimulation. These findings support the belief that there is a connection between LSD and schizophrenia. For example, LSD-like biogenic amines may occur in "pernicious catatonia" or receptors may undergo changes such as occur in normal subjects given LSD. This may also hold good for other schizophrenic disorders.
