Acorus calamus is uncontrolled in the United States. This means all parts of the plant and its extracts are legal to cultivate, buy, possess, and distribute (sell, trade or give) without a license or prescription.

Calamus has been banned as a food additive by the FDA in all forms including its extacts and oils. This means it may not be added to food products sold in the U.S.
