Erowid Announcement #60
Oct 14, 2005
Dear Friends of Erowid,

One of Erowid's two main laptops died last week. We're now in need of a functional laptop in the very short term and can't afford to buy one. We're asking whether someone in the community might have a notebook computer less than three or four years old that they would consider donating to Erowid.

This machine would be used by Sylvia, one of Erowid's three key crew members and Contributing Editor of Erowid Extracts. The machine needs to be fairly recent as it will be used for HTML, SSH, Photoshop, InDesign, Office, Firefox, and (the biggest resource hog) Eclipse. It could be either Windows or Macintosh, but it needs to meet the following specs:

Minimum Requirements:
  1. 700 MHz or faster CPU
  2. 256 MB RAM (or expandable to that size)
  3. 1024 x 768 + screen resolution
  4. 2+ hours of battery life or ability to expand
  5. 20 GB hard drive
  6. Wireless capability or open PCMCIA slot
  7. Functioning audio in and out
  8. Ability to run WinXP or OSX.4
  9. External VGA / Monitor hookup<
  10. Under 7 pounds, including battery
Preferred Requirements
  1. 1 GHz+ CPU
  2. 1 GB RAM (or expandable to that size)
  3. Wireless built in (not PCMCIA)
  4. Under 6 pounds including battery
The machine would used for working on Erowid remotely, transcribing interviews, researching and editing documents, and managing volunteers. This would often be Sylvia's main interface to the world, so something that works well is important. We're happy to reinstall the OS, upgrade RAM, and do other light upgrades and maintenance.

We need to find something in the next month and need help making that happen. If you have a notebook you're not using or are looking for an excuse to upgrade yours, please reply to this email or contact

Thanks for your support,
Earth, Fire, & Sylvia

If you find Erowid a useful resource and are interested in supporting its future development, please consider donating or becoming a member.
