Due to the recent lack of availability of mimosa hostilis bark (jurema) lately in the US, I decided to try brewing an ayahuasca analog using acacia confusa bark, which was recommended by one online vendor as a substitute for mimosa. Sometimes this mixture is referred to as formosahuasca, as the acacia tree is native to Taiwan and environs.

I read a few recipes/accounts on various online forums that suggested that I could do a very quick brew with the acacia (vs. the three washes and 6 or more hours of simmering with the mimosa). The recommended method was to chop up the acacia bark, then powder it. I did so in a coffee grinder. I used approximately ½ oz. of bark (approx. 14 grams). When powdered, this was about 2 Tablespoons. The online accounts suggested using anywhere from 1.5 to 3 Tablespoons per dose.

Next, I combined 1 ½ cups very hot (but not boiling) water that I had heated in my microwave with the acacia bark. I added about a teaspoon of lemon juice (fresh lemon, not bottled, to help with the quick alkaloid extraction – adding something acidic like a tablespoon of lemon or vinegar or a tablet of vitamin C is recommended for fast extractions) and let this brew about 5 minutes.

About 30 minutes previously I had ground up about 5 grams of Syrian rue to serve as my MAOI inhibitor so as to allow oral ingestion of the DMT from the acacia. After powdering in my coffee grinder, I filled 5 size 00 gel caps with the rue and swallowed them with some cinnamon tea (black pekoe tea flavored with cinnamon). I find this the easiest method, as compared to steeping and drinking the rue. This method also leads to less liquid volume in the stomach, and less stomach distress, in my opinion.

After the acacia steeped for 5 minutes in the hot water and lemon juice, I poured the brew into a French press coffee maker, which trapped all the sediment in the bottom and filtered the brew. I poured it into a cup and gave it a try. It was still a little gritty, so I poured it through a coffee filter. This seemed to help, though the brew was still a bit gritty. That’s one of the problems with powdering materials. I tried to siphon it through my teeth.

With this quick brew method, the taste was much lighter, no heavy tannins or chalky taste. The bitterness was reduced as well. It tasted like some bad herbal tea, a bit earthy and tart due to the lemon, but nowhere near as bad or bitter as ayahuasca containing Psychotria viridis or mimosa. Those taste like mulch to me. This tasted like fresh hay. (Some accounts suggest the tannins in the DMT containing mixture are one of the causes of nausea/intestinal distress. More tannins are released the longer the brew is cooked. Reduce the cooking time, reduce the tannins, reduce the nausea.) I drank the brew over about 20 minutes.

At the time I starting ingesting the brew, I could already feel the Syrian rue coming on – colors got brighter and more sparkly, the movie I was watching became much crisper and vivid. I felt coolness streaming through my body, refreshing my skin, and my ears buzzed. Typically I only use about 3 grams of Syrian rue, but this time I used closer to 5, and it was probably too much, it left me feeling too alert and wired (in fact, I was up until about 4:30 unable to sleep afterward and slept no more than 4 hours that night.)

At this point, I went to bed and put on some music, and spent the next 3 hours sending my consciousness out into the cosmos. It was the typical ayahuasca type trip, so I won’t describe in detail, other than to say I feel I communed with other intelligences – plant, animal and alien – and reached some emotional epiphanies about the course of my life. At several points I was sobbing into my pillow in a cathartic way. I felt drained afterward, emotionally wrought, but in a positive way. I feel I gained important insight into my life patterns that will help me change for the better.

I feel this short-brew method of preparation has several benefits, including a lighter more palatable taste and streamlined preparation time. I was doubtful at first, having always done the multiple washes requiring all day, and I didn’t really expect to have any effects after steeping the acacia for only 5 minutes. I was very pleasantly surprised. However, this was a somewhat less intense trip than others I’ve had, but then again, I didn’t even ingest the full ½ oz of acacia, probably only about 2/3 of the tea (so maybe 10 grams worth). I did experience a bit of stomach discomfort, at times feeling like it might be beneficial to vomit, but I didn’t. (I don’t typically vomit when taking ayahuasca, though I have on occasion.) I’m more inclined to blame the 5 grams of Syrian rue for the stomach discomfort. I also got very cold, and had a difficult time walking around – felt very wobbly and shaky.

I saved the leftover tea and root bark, figuring I will try one more extraction from it. I will definitely experiment more with the acacia and with this streamlined preparation method! This was very fast, cheap, and rewarding.
