This past Saturday I attended a rave at an outdoor venue in the PNW. It was my first rave experience, and as such I was both nervous and excited. I was planning on taking two drugs for the event, MDMA and 2cb (a psychedelic similar to the practice of candy-flipping). I had done my research and it seemed that the 2cb interacted well with the molly and helped ease the negative effects of the comedown. I have a fair amount of prior experience with drugs, having done/taken/smoked marijuana, salvia, shrooms, vicodin (recreationally), MDMA, and having participated in a kava ceremony (but that’s another story…) I had rolled before, but never rolled face and always in combination with another substance (usually alcohol). I knew vaguely what to expect, but never having taken MDMA in large doses, I wasn’t sure what it would be like if I was rolling hard. So little did I know the wild day that lay in store when my friend showed up at my tent with my drugs the morning of the rave.

She told me that our dealer had only had molly crystals, but that she had “googled it and it’s a legit thing.” She warned me that the dealer had mentioned it would be more intense. Never having had molly in any form other than powder in capsules, I took her word and divided up the crystals with her, taking about ¼ of the amount we had ($20 worth). I then stashed it for later.

That afternoon, after drinking some wine and smoking weed with my friends, it was time to head to the rave. I was the only one of my friends I had camped with who was going to be on hard drugs. I zipped myself into the tent, crushed my crystals, and cut the powder into two lines. I decided to start with the smaller of the two, planning on snorting the second immediately after.
As soon as I snorted the line I knew something was different. My nose, which was a little sensitive from being in such a dry climate, was burning unlike anything I had ever experienced with molly before. It hurt so badly that I couldn’t do the second line, and tried various methods of easing the pain including using a Vick’s Vapo Inhaler I had brought for when I was rolling. But nothing helped. All of a sudden, minutes after snorting it, I was coming up fast and hard. My heart was racing and I couldn’t stop talking at a ridiculously fast pace. I knew I was sped up, but I couldn’t help it. It was impossible to calm down. I began to panic, never having had a come-up this fast or intense. My stomach began to churn, and I felt extremely nauseated. I decided to lie down in my tent. This eased the nausea, but I couldn’t stop moving. I decided to smoke a bowl to try to calm down, began to feel incredibly happy, and decided it was time to go to the concert. All of a sudden I realized I couldn’t find my ticket. I tore my tent apart. I literally felt like a tornado. I was so hyped up that I was throwing everything our tent in the air after searching it for my ticket. I ended up having to buy a new ticket, but no matter! I was feeling great!

In case you haven’t caught on by now, the “molly crystals” were not molly, but crystal meth that my friend had unwittingly bought from either a dealer who didn’t know better or who didn’t have molly and knew we were probably naïve enough to buy the meth. There were definite signs, looking back, that I was not rolling. Although I was super into dancing, and felt like the best dancer at the rave, I wasn’t getting the same feelings from touch and music. I was also not feeling the same loving feelings that I knew I should have felt on MDMA. I distinctly remember when a man was trying to dance with both my friend and me at the same time. On molly I have no doubt that I would have loved it, getting the chance to share that experience with my friend and a new friend. However, I merely felt irritated and vaguely creeped out. I was also unusually suspicious that someone was going to steal things out of my backpack. I also began to crave the initial rush, and after taking my second line about 3 hours after my first, I began to discuss the possibility of getting more drugs with my friends. Although I wasn’t coming down, I felt vaguely desperate and vehement about getting even more drugs. I went so far as to ask strangers for acid, so that I might trip while riding the ferris wheel.

About 4 ½ hours after I snorted my first line, I decided to take my 2cb (remember that I was still under the impression that I was merely rolling face). My friend told me to only do one pill and wait and see, but I scoffed at him, taking both at once. Needless to say, this did not go well. About 30-40 minutes after taking them I began to feel extremely nauseated and had to leave the crowd to throw up. The 2cb definitely did eventually help with the comedown though. I barely noticed my comedown from the meth. I didn’t get many visuals, though I’m not sure whether that has to do with the fact that I threw it up or the quality of my drugs. (I have another friend who also took 2 doses and didn’t feel anything).

For me, I mostly felt very present in my body. The best way to describe it would be a very sensual feeling. I felt very sexy when I was dancing. At first that was connected with the meth feelings, but toward the end of the night I began to notice that while I wasn’t so hyped up, I was definitely feeling my body in a different way. The world also did look different, though not in a way I could put my finger on. At night I did get some light trails and geometric hallucinations during Above and Beyond (AMAZING).

Overall it was a wild day and I had an amazing time. Even so, taking meth is not something I am going to try again. The desperation and craving I felt while tweaking are frightening looking back, but what freaks me out even more is the fact that even now, the deep down carnal part of me wants nothing more than taking meth again. Thankfully, I do not think I will be able to get ahold of any, which will hopefully give me some time to recover and rid myself of the cravings.
