Coleus Attempts

The first time I tried coleus, I gathered about 10 large leaves, chewed them, and kept them in my mouth for about 1 minute per leaf. After this, I sat back and waited. I know that this is considered a very small dose, but I couldn’t just take 50-70 leaves out of my mom’s garden, and I had read reports of active doses in this range. The plant was a Kong Coleus, which I have heard to be active on other sites.

I was expecting a calm mood and maybe slight visual alterations, but was also extremely cautious to avoid mistaking any placebo effect for a high. I guess I was also slightly nervous, as this was to be my first drug experience (aside from alcohol, caffeine, etc.). I waited 1.5 hours, but nothing happened. I was well prepared, as I had read and reread every bit of information,. At this point, it was about 2 am (a normal summer bedtime for me, as I usually stay up late and read), and I was tired, so I decided to go to sleep and see if I could at least experience some lucid dreams, like I had read about. I experienced nothing, making this first attempt a failure.

Attempt 2

I tried to smoke some dried coleus, but had no rolling papers, and used loose leaf. The leaves were air-dried over the course of about 1.5 weeks. Although I had heard that drying the leaf removes its psychoactive potential, I decided it would be worth a try, because it is not that well studied, so the reports could be wrong. I rolled a small joint of about 1 leaf (smoking dosages tend to be lower than oral dosages, and this was my first time smoking, so I wanted to keep it small). Needless to say, the paper was harsh, and the coleus stank awfully. This was the nastiest smoke I have ever smelled. The first drag was my last, and I put it out. I felt a little calm, but this could have easily been placebo.

Attempt 3

I was bored, and I thought I would try another smoke. I rolled a larger joint this time, and used 3 leaves. The first drag left me coughing, but I was persistent, and took 2 or three more. After this, I quit and put it out. I ground up the remaining embers of leaf, and attempted to insufflate them, but this had limited success, and it is not likely that much, if any, was absorbed. I went back to The Proud Highway by Hunter S. Thompson, which I had been reading, but couldn’t concentrate because I was now suffering from a very bad headache, and nausea. I took 500 mg of acetaminophen (Tylenol), but it didn’t seem to help. At this point, I decided to cut my losses and get some sleep (this was about 1:30 am). I woke up at about 11:00 am, feeling nauseas, and with a headache, but each was reduced.

Conclusion: I was unable to achieve noticeable effects through these methods and doses. I didn’t try a tea, because I would probably need as many, if not more, leaves as for an oral dose. I will never try to smoke coleus again, and threw away my remaining leaves today. If I ever get about 60 leaves, I will try them orally. My type of plant is supposed to be active, so I don’t think that this was the cause of failure.
