It was in my first year of University that I found Absinthe could be bought it one of my local clubs. Having Heard so much about it I thought there was no time like the present and went out for the night with my friend Callum for a night at this certain club.
I started off drinking a pint of lager, which didnt really help matters, when I decided it would be a good idea to try absinthe.
The Absinthe I had was legal kind available over here in England but still, Callum brought over my first shot which I quickly downed. I hated the initial taste of aniseed and jerked for a minute as my body got used to the taste.
I didn't feel to bad. 1 pint and 1 shot and I only felt slightly tipsy so Callum and I both followed it up with two more shots. This is when things began to change.
I began to feel drowsy and had an intense need to lie down and sleep. I needed cigarette after cigarette and this was soon followed by an intense need to throw up, which, with the lights in the club, appeared to be day-glo.
I began to see purple stripes and not just double, but triple of people. I felt unsteady and no matter how much I wanted to walk forwards, always found myself falling sideways.
Callum and I decided it was time to go home, as we walked out of the club the cold air hit me and I sat down on the pavement. The next thing I knew it was 2 hrs later and I had fallen asleep and woken myself up nearly choking on my own vomit.
I stood up and went crashing into the wall across the other side of the street throwing up into someones cellar and into grids, bushes and the road. At this point I didnt realise callum had passed out on the steps of the club and I rang for a taxi.
As I got into the taxi, I found I couldnt physically lift myself onto the seat, and found myself heaving to vomit and swallowing it back down so I could get home quicker and not to anger the taxi driver.
I found I also had a fixation of checking I had all my belongings with me in my handbag, I kept checking over and over on the the floor of the taxi that I had my purse, phone and keys, even tho I had totally forgotten where the hell my shoes were and still to this day have no idea.
We walked across the stony path our halls of residence, supporting each other as we went. I didnt feel a thing on the stones in bare feet but sure as hell knew about it the day after.
My flatmate took me off callum and helped me up to my flat, where I found the normaly, dull lights, blindingly bright. I dropped cigarettes all over the floor half undressing myself and falling on a heap in the floor spending a good 4 hrs throwing up into a plastic jug and eventually collasping into bed.
When I woke up the next morning, I didn't have a hangover as such, as just a severe desire to carry on throwing up, which I did for a further two hrs. I found I had soiled myself aswell as thworing up in bed at some point and leaving my door wide open. Luckily no one else was awake my this time!
I cleaned myself and my room up and then downed a pint of water, which could have been one of the worse things I could possibly have done as it brought on the affects of absinthe all over again.
Callum was in the same state as me, and we both found it strange how after a while during the night before crashing out, we did feel quite sober in our heads, but our bodies were telling us a different story!
Neither of us were well for nearly 2 weeks afterwards, feeling constantly like we had some sort of stomach bug, the first few days after, being the most intense for this feeling.
The experience I found was quite frightning as I knew I had no control over what my body did. In those two hours I had fallen asleep on the pavement, anybody could have done anything to me and I would have been none the wiser.
Although the night is now the butt of all of our jokes, I will never be repeating it and wish never to go anywhere near the 'green goddess' again!
