Abstract
Describes the authors' combining two Greek root words to coin the term "entheogen"--meaning to generate an experience of the divine--as an ethnographic term describing the psychoactive plants and compounds used for spiritual purposes in ancient and contemporary practices; conceived of as a replacement for the words hallucinogen and psychedelic, which the authors find problematic for reasons presented within the article.
