“A study of the effect of 3,4-dimethoxyphenylethylamine on cortical evoked potentials in the rat”.
Int J Neuropharmacol. 1967 Nov 06;6(6):529-42.
Abstract
The action on the central nervous system of 3,4-dimethoxyphenylethylamine DMPE, a substance reported to be present in the urine of schizophrenic patients, has been investigated. The cortical potentials evoked by stimulation of the right forepaw were used to assess the action of DMPE, when administered both topically and systemically. Topical application produced an increase in the evoked responses, not modified by previous reserpinzation, nor by adrenerglc a blockers, but blocked by strychnine. The action of DMPE blocked the inhibitory action of topically applied noradrenaline, tyramine and dopamine. The effects of systemic administration were complicated by the accompanying changes in blood pressure, but there is some evidence that DMPE crosses the blood-brain barrier.
