“NOTES ON THE SCHEDULING OF CATHINONE, CATHINE, AND THE PLANT CATHA EDULIS KHAT”.
private e-mail legal analysis of drug scheduling. 1999 Oct.
Abstract
Legal analysis by attorney Richard Glen Boire regarding the 'scheduling' of Catha edulis and its two primary psychoactive compounds, cathinone and cathine. Text contained within an e-mail from attorney Jerry D. Patchen sent to Dennis McKenna and Alexander Shulgin. The leaves of the plant Catha edulis a.k.a. khat, qat are chewed by hundreds of thousands of people around the world, particularly in Yemen, Somalia, Kenya, and a large expatriate community in Great Britain. In the United States, its primary use appears to be in landscaping. According to the DEA, the plant is unlawful to possess in the United States because it endogenously produces two substances, cathinone and cathine, both of which are now controlled substances in the USA.
