“Identification of alkaloid intermediates by gas chromatography-mass spectrometryIPotential mescaline precursors in Trichocereus species”.
Lloydia. 1969 Mar 07;32(1):40-5.
Abstract
The determination of biosynthetic sequences in the formation of alkaloids from primary metabolites is often complicated by a number of inherent difficulties. Many times, not naturally occurring but theoretically plausible intermediates are administered to a plant and, if the precursor is incorporated into the alkaloid in question, there still remains the important question: Is the incorporated precursor the natural precursor or is it rather a foreign compound which can be metabolized to the alkaloid? Thus, it must be established that an incorporated intermediate is naturally occurring and a 'true precursor.'
