“The detection of mephedrone 4-methylmethcathinone in 4 fatalities in Scotland”.
Forensic Sci Int. 2010 Aug 5.
Abstract
Between February and May of 2010 authors identified mephedrone in four fatalities. In two of these cases mephedrone use was suspected to be involved in the death from witness accounts. In cases such as these femoral blood samples collected at post-mortem are subjected to abroad drug and alcohol screen including acidic and basic drugs and drugs of abuse.

Several fatalities were reported in the media initially implicating mephedrone misuse but few have actually resulted in mephedrone being cited as the cause of death. Investigations are on-going in the four cases presented here but mephedrone intoxication has been recorded as the cause of death in cases 1 and 2. The cause of death in case 4 was attributed to a stab wound of the abdomen.
