Abstract
This review will bring together a number of the known facts related to the cactus origins of the phenethylamine alkaloids, a comparison of their chemical structures, a listing of several synthetic variants that are known and a description of the psychopharmacologic intoxication that follows their administration to normal human subjects. This will be centered upon the drug mescaline which is the major active alkaloid of the North American clumpling cactus, known bv the common name Peyote.
