“The effect of LSD on the metabolism of rat brain serotonin”.
Pharmacologist. 1967;9:251.
Abstract
The interaction between d-lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) and 5-HT has prompted speculation on the nature of LSD effects on brain 5-HT. We confirmed Lovell et al, (Fed.Proc.26:708, 1967) that in rat brain LSD (1 mg/kg, i.p.) increased 5-HT (20%) and decreased 5-HIAA (20%). Since the 5-HIAA levels decreased, the increased 5-HT is probably inconsistent with a) a decreased turnover of 5-HT and b) an inhibition of MAO. LSD decreased the molar rate of decline of 5-HIAA after pargyline (75 mg/kg, i.p.). Inhibition of MAO is less likely because LSD produced a significant decrease in brain norepinephrine (NE) and dopamine (DA) levels. Since these findings may also indicate a release of NE and DA, we are measuring the turnover rate of these amines after repeated injection of LSD.
