“Neuropsychiatric manifestations following the use of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA: 'Ecstasy')”.
Prog Neuropsychopharmacol Biol Psychiatry. 1997 May;21(4):727-34.
Abstract
Discusses the recurring side-effects associated with methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) consumption. The recreational use of 'Ecstasy'(MDMA's nickname), has been implicated in the onset of various psychological, neurological and organic complications. The constellation of adverse symptomatology associated with Ecstacy use include anxiety, panic attacks, disorientation, delusions, depression, suicidal ideations, flashback, rage reactions, psychosis, depersonalization, derealization, severe paranoia, and organic complications which include rhabdomyolysis, hepatitis, hemorrhage, coma and deaths in some instances. An original case report of a 17-yr-old male is presented, in which the Subject developed perpetual neuropsychiatric symptomatology after having consumed MDMA. This case shows that MDMA may induce long-lasting effects, even after an exposure. ((c) 1999 APA/PsycINFO, all rights reserved)
