Abstract
The effects of drugs affecting serotonergic mechanisms on insect behavior were studied. Methods Simple learning pattern of cockroach Periplaneta americana was observed. They normally clean their antennae by pulling it down to the mouth with 1 of the anterior legs. If the first pair of legs is amputated, after 8 -10 days of 'trials and errors' the cockroach is able to clean its antennae holding them with one of the middle legs

The 1st pair of legs were amputated and the antennae covered with honey to provoke the animal to clean them. Myrmeleon larvae build funnel-shaped traps in sand. The time of building of the traps and their diameter were measured. Experimental animals were fed ants injected previously with p-chlorophenylalanine (pCPA), LSD-25, or serotonin (5-HT) whilst controls received ants injected with 0.6aline. Each ant lion received, during 4-6 consecutive days, ants injected with saline and then ants injected with drug. Results Both LSD-25 (0.6-0.8 mcg) and pCPA (15-20 mcg) facilitated time of building of traps and the diameter was decreased. Ant lions receiving 5-HTP (15-20/mcg) showed slightly prolonged time of building of traps whilst the diameter was markedly increased. Cockroachs receiving LSD-25 (3-5 mcg per day) + pCPA (50-100 mcg per day) cleaned their antennae 4-5 days after amputation whilst control insects did so 10 days after surgery. 5-HTP caused no clear effects and only slightly retarded this behavior.
