Interactions between serotonergic and catecholaminergic systems in the brain are discussed in a review. Pharmacological experiments involving the use of apomorphine, amphetamine, phenothiazines, butyrophenones, haloperidol, chlorpromazine, pCPA and LSD 25 have provided evidence for a dopamine (DA)-5-HT interaction. Destruction of the 5-HT system appears to lead to increased activity of the DA system. The DA system of the substantia nigra and striatum and the serotonergic system of the raphe produce opposite behavioral effects. Experiments on the effects of 6-OH-DA, and electrolytic lesions on 5-HT and NA metabolism also provided evidence for the interaction of NA and 5-HT. Interaction between 5-HT and catscholaminergic systems plays an essential role in the sleep-waking cycle. REM sleep is accompanied by phasic electrical phenomena such as ponto-geniculo-occipital waves (MCGO). Some drugs, e.g. reserpine and pCPA which decrease brain 5-HT levels can induce in the cat the occurrence of MCGO waves disconnected from the sleep-waking cycle. 5-HTP reverses the effects of reserpine and pCPA. MCGO activity is inhibited by microinjections of quipazine and increased by a-methyltyrosine. To explain these phenomena the Author presents his own model and models put forward previously. Actions of 5-HT and catecholaminergic syatems may be antagonistic with respect to operant condition situations and aggressive behavior and appear to play opposite roles in regulation of aggressive and sexual behavior.
