Abstract
The effects of pre- and postnatal exposure to LSD on brain maturation were investigated in mice. Method Pregnant COW mice received a single i.p., injection of LSD 5mcg/kg either on postconception day 12 or 18, and all offspring were weighed at 8 wk of age. Neonates were given a single i.p. injection of LSD 50 mcg/kg on various postnatal days and then were sacrificed and weighed at various fixed time intervals. 1 Group of neonates also received 100 mcg testosterone propionate together with 50 mcg/kg LSD on the first day of life, they were subsequently sacrificed after 8 wk. Results Prenatal exposure to LSD on the 12th day of intrauterine life caused an increase in body weight and weight of the mesencephalon of male offspring at 8 wk and in medulla-pons weight of females. Exposure to the drug on the 18th day of intrauterine life caused a decrease in medulla-pons weight of female offspring at 8 wk. Exposure of neonates on the 1 st day of life caused an increase in diencephalon weight of females at 8 and 14 days, and an increase in mesencephalon weight in males at 6 wk of age. Testosterone treatment had no additional effects on weight changes. Mice exposed to LSD on the 12th day of intrauterine life exhibited elevated MAO (monoamine oxidase) levels at 1, 4, and 8 wk of age. There does not appear to be any clear cut explanation for the weight changes brought about by exposure to LSD.
