“Isolation-induced Timidity In Mice As A Measure Of Anxiolytic Activity Of Drugs.”.

About 20-50 percent of singly-housed albino male mice show timidity (alert postures, running away, defensive postures and squeaking,instead of aggression on dyadic interactions with group-housed male mice, though their partners do not show any aggression. The behaviour of timid isolates is intraindividually stable (Activ,nerv.sup.1,,21,1973) and can be used for ascertaining of drug-actývity profiles.(Activ.nerv.sup.14,285,1972) as well as for detection of aggression evoking potential of drugs(Res.Comm.Chem. Pathol.Pharmacol.7,237,1974) Chlordiazepoxide, diazopam, barbitone and chlorpromazine inhibited timidity without reducing other motor activities in the timid mice, barbitone and diazepam increased markedly their sociability at the same time. Imipramine and ethylalcohol lowered timidity only in high doses which decreased also other components of behaviour in the timid isolates.Amphetamine and LSD did not reduce the timid response. Thus,the timidity shown by some singly-housed male mice on interaction with non-aggressive partners seems to be a good measure of anxiolytic activity of drugs. Experiments are in progress to make use of this model in the study of biochemical mechanisms of fear.
