Abstract
Chronic psychiatric patients, mainly schizophrenics and patients with neurotic reactions and depressive states were selected for this study. The patients were given a total of 80 sessions; dosage 50-400 mcg. LSD orally or parenterally. On average the effect set in after 30-45 minutes the maximal effect lasting 60-90 minutes. Chronix psychiatric patients tolerated larger doses of LSD than patients with neurotic reactions. . Under LSD the effects were changed: euphoria, laughing and complete release of inhibition were observed. In cases of depressive syndrome the depression tended to decrease or even disappeared (2 cases described in detail). Patients who were introvert and negative seemed to come out of their stupor following treatment with LSD (1 case described in detail). Although numerous psychopathological symptoms were still present, they were more accessible to analysis. . In 3 patients the effect of LSD was protracted even after administration of an antidote. In all but 2 cases chlorpromazine was used as an antidote. In 2 patients nicotinic acid was given. The results were more favorable when chlorpromazine was given at the height of the LSD effect than nicotinic acid. . No side effects were observed; 3 patients only showed an impulsive reaction. . The authors conlucude that LSD is a very useful drug in psychiatric practice and will be administered more frequently in the future. . (See 803)
