“The "correction" of deviant responses on a word association test”.
A.M.A. Arch.Gen.Psychiat.. 1960;3:17-20.
Abstract
Nineteen young male volunteers were given the word association test (WAT) [according to C.G. Jung] twice with an interval of one week between test and retest. Each test consists of 2 parts. In the first part the subject has to respond quickly with the first word that comes to his mind to each of 60 stimulus words. In the second part the words are read again and he is asked to give the same responses that he gave the first time. Reaction time, reproduction failures, as well as delayed reaction, are noted. . In the present group "popular reaction words" increased from 56.80n the initial test to 61.30n the retest. The number of association disturbances was 7.4 in the first and 5.1 in the second test. . The reaction time was 2.2 seconds on the first test and 2.0 seconds on the second. 37.7 or 62.90f total first responses were exactly repeated in the retest. 87 or 62.10f 140 deviant responses on the first test were corrected in the second. . Six volunteers were given 2 mcg. LSD per kg. 1 1/2 hours prior to the second administration of the WAT. The mean number of exact repetitions on the retest was 37.7 or 62.8%, which almost exactly duplicated the findings for the 19 control subjects. 10 or 27.00r 37 deviant responses on the initial test were corrected, as compared with 62.9 0.000000or the control subjects. . The authors consider the correction of deviant responses as the unconscious mobilization of the ego-defense. This ego-defense may be weakened by LSD. . Comment: In a former investigation this group of authors found that a marked improvement was observed when the test was repeated several days later (See 670). The present study was undertaken in order to investigate this "practice" effect.
