Abstract
This study is concerned with the psychotherapeutic aspect of the work with LSD and the way it can be integrated into general analytical procedure. Important features of psychological LSD effects are their unpredictability (e.g. hallucinations, alteration of body image, phenomena of depersonalization etc.) and arbitrariness. The closer a patient is to a psychosis the more he will identify himself with and become absorbed by his visions or hallucinations. . LSD was given orally between 1/4-4 ml. [25-400 mcg.] according to the individual patient's response. The "LSD-day" was spent in bed, nembutal was given at the end of the day to counteract more drastic effects. . Five categories of typical LSD experiences served as guide principle for grouping clinical material. 1. Drastic experiences through sudden activation of interior functions. 2. Emergence of repressed material. 3. Alterations of the body image. 4. Activation of archetypal symbolism. 5. Experiences resembling those of a mystical or cosmic character. . Observations on transference and countertransference, resistance, and defense mechanism are discussed. The most straightforward form of resistance is that of the obsessive which responds particularly well to treatment with LSD. There seemed to be a greater readiness for the defense to "burst" and allow the unconscious activities to come into consciousness. . The study is illustrated by samples of case material.
