Practically all ergot alkaloids and their derivatives including LSD basically influence the same functions but to varying degrees and (on central functions) possibly also in different directions (diagrams show the effects of Gynergen, Dihydroergotamine-Sandoz, ergometrine and LSD). . The main effect of LSD is the stimulation of the mesodiencephalon centers. Based on this is the general excitation (E)-syndrome with sympathicotonia, hyperreflexia and motor hyperactivity in animals. . Because of the obvious connection between the E-syndrome in animals and psychotomimetic effect in man, 18 LSD derivatives were investigated quantitatively in regard to both effects as well as to their peripheral anti-serotonin effect. . A significant parallel was found between the E-syndrome and psychotomimetic effect; both are suppressed or inhibited by variations in the basic structure (apart from substitution on the indole-N). On the other hand, there was no significant parallel between psychotomimetic and peripheral anti-serotonin effects. . The parallel between the E-syndrome and psychotomimetic effect corresponds to the close connections between autonomic and psychic functions postulated by Hess as long ago as 1925. .
