Abstract
Seventy experiments were carried out on 15 young chimpanzees over a period of two years. In the intact chimpanzee LSD (60 mcg/kg orally) produced a consistent and characteristic abnormal behavior pattern. After bifrontal lobectomy the reactions of the chimpanzees to ordinary situations were radically changed but the reaction to LSD was not. After bilateral temporal lobectomy the reaction of the chimpanzees to ordinary situations was unchanged, except for four weeks following surgery, but the reaction to LSD was obviously changed; some autonomic reactions remained but there was no panic or perceptual aberration. Unilateral temporal lobectomy did not alter the response to LSD.
