Abstract
Review of the results of investigations in normal subjects, psychotic patients, mice, cats, rabbits and rats and on isolated organs. . In human beings the effects of 0.1-0.25 mg LSD orally set in after 15-20 minutes, reached a peak after 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 hours and lasted 9 - 12 hours. The effects of 0.1 - 0.2 mg LSD i.m. set in after 15-20 minutes, reached a peak after one hour and laster 9 - 10 hours. The effects of 0.04 - 0.18 mg LSD i.v. set in after 5 - 10 minutes, reached a peak after one hour and lasted 8 - 9 hours. The effects of 0.02 - 0.06 mg LSD injected into the cerebrospinal fluid set in immediately, reached a peak after 30 miutes and lasted 6 - 8 hours. . Effect on psyche: LSD elicited a syndrome reminiscent of hebephrenic schizophrenia. Harmine elicited a paranoid syndrome. Mescaline elicited a catatonia-like syndrome. . Effects on motor function: LSD elicited slight disturbance of coordination, particularly evident if the eyes were closed. Harmine caused tremor and jerks of the extremities. Mescaline caused slight tremor of the extremities. . The effects of the three drugs on psyche, motor function, as well as their central and peripheral effects on the autonomic nervous system are depicted in table form.
