Abstract
The changes in cerebral metabolism of rabbits caused by chronic administration of LSD (Cf. Cahn et al., Compt. rend. Soc. biol. Paris 151: 1820, 1957) were antagonized by simultaneous administration of epinephrine, ephedrine, phentolamine or pyridostigmine bromide. The EEG was restored to normal by epinephrine in 500f animals, by ephedrine in 80% and by phentolamine and pyridostigmine bromide in 100%. . A possible explanation is that phentolamine inhibits the LSD-induced sympathicotonia, preventing the collapse of autonomic regulation resulting from chronic administration of LSD, while the effects of epinephrine, ephedrine and pyridostigmine bromide on the EEG are due to a synchronizing action.
