“The problem of schizophrenia in the light of experimental psychiatry.”.
Experimental psychopathology. 1957;p205.
Abstract
The similarities and differences between experimentally induced psychosis and schizophrenia are discussed in detail. The following points are of particular interest: . In normal subjects LSD and mescaline produce a schizophrenia-like experimental psychosis. In cases of pseudoneurotic schizophrenia, i.e. patients with subtle symptoms, the drugs intensify the underlying symptoms. The gross psychotic reaction can be abolished by drugs such as chlorpromazine, pervitin and sodium amytal. In chronic schizophrenics average doses produce autonomic symptoms, but do not intensify the schizophrenic symptoms. High doses activate the psychosis.
