“Modificazioni biochimiche, elettroencefalografiche, istochimiche ed istopatologiche, in cani, durante l'intossicazione sperimentale acuta e cronica da dietilamide dell'acido lisergico”.

Abstract
Two dogs poisoned with 1 and 10 mg LSD i.v. respectively developed psychomotor excitement followed by depression and, in one case, catatonia. In chronic poisoning experiments (4 mg i.m. over 23 days, 11.8 mg i.m. over 56 days and 15.3 mg. orally over 90 days) the animals developed psychomotor excitement initially but were soon normal again. After LSD the EEG showed high frequency waves of low amplitude. Hypoglycaemia and hyperbilirubinaemia were generally noted in the chronic poisoning experiments. The histochemical phosphatase reactions in the brain were modified, particularly in acute poisoning. The liver and kidneys exhibited degenerative changes in the parenchyma. The findings support the hepatotoxic theory of schizophrenia.
