Abstract
Ecstasy or methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA) is one of a large number of drugs categorised as hallucinogenic amphetamines. It is an entirely synthetic compound that was first produced in Germany in the early 1900s.

Ecstasy is not a 'designer drug'. This term refers to drugs whose molecular structures have been altered to retain their psychoactive effects in such a way that the drug legislation can be circumvented. The misconception probably occured because Ecstasy 'appeared' on the drugs scene in the late 1980s as if it had been 'designed' specifically to meet the requirement of young people at the time.
