Fentanyl
Fatalities / Deaths
by Erowid
NOTES #
Fentanyl is an extremely potent opioid analgesic, active well under 1 miligram. A single milligram of fentanyl taken orally could be fatal in some people, any visible amount that was accidentally insufflated could result in coma, dangerously suppressed breathing, or death. There are a large number of confirmed fentanyl-related fatalities world wide, though Erowid does not have a comprehensive list.

In 2011, 24% of all drug related deaths in Bavaria, Germany were associated with fentanyl. --EMCDDA 2012 New Drugs in Europe Report.

In 2008, according to the Drug Abuse Warning Network, 20,179 emergency department visits in the United States were fentanyl-related.

In 2002, DAWN's Medical Examiner reports showed over 100 deaths at least partially attributed to fentanyl use. See Paulozzi LJ, 2006.

Decedent: Unidentified Male. 2011. #
Erowid. "A death from the non-suicidal combination of ketamine and fentanyl." Erowid.org. May 2013.
Erowid received the report of a death in 2011 from an extremely credible, but anonymous source. The decedent had been a long time ketamine user and had recently been experimenting with the combination of ketamine and fentanyl (an extremely dangerous combination). The blood levels from the toxicology report indicated recreational, non-suicidal levels. Breathing suppression was the assumed cause of death.
