The organization was founded partly as an absurdist religion, partly as a religious expression of the psychedelic movement, and partly as a device to gain religious exemption from American drug laws such as those outlawing LSD. Church clergy, known as Boo Hoos, claimed LSD as a sacrament. The original primary religious text of the church was The Boo Hoo Bible: The Neo-American Church Catechism and Handbook written by Kleps ** 212 pages. 8.5 x 11 inches. ** Postage for oversized and international shipping will be calculated by size and weight. It is written as a collection of comments and anecdotes of the author's personal experiences in that endeavor. It relates the true story of his fight for justifying and defending the use of drugs. ** Art Kleps (b.1928) was a drug legalization advocate. Formerly a psychologist, he founded the Neo-American Church to defend the use of marijuana and other hallucinogens, as well as peyote for spiritual enlightenment. Together with Timothy Leary, he endeavored to legalize the use of drugs for their therapeutic potential. ** EDITION POINTS: True First Edition, presented in newspaper format. ** Postage for oversized and international shipping will be calculated by size and weight. Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. First and only hardcover edition of this insider account of the 1960s psychedelics movement, mostly centered on the eventful year Kleps spent living with Timothy Leary et al. at the upstate New York mansion familiarly known as Millbrook. A freewheeling romp which makes no pretense about its subjectivity but is nonetheless chock-full of insights and decidedly juicy gossip about one of the highwater moments in American counterculture. Kleps (1928-1999) was founder of the Neo-American Church, author of The Boo Hoo Bible, and one of the era?s foremost psychedelic agitators, though his hold-nothing-sacred style of anarchic humor was sometimes a point of contention among his peers. First edition thus; originally published in newsprint tabloid format in 1975. Octavo, 8.75 x 5.75 in. 355pp. Light blue cloth stamped in silver on front board and spine; lacking a jacket, we believe as issued. A touch of wear/whitening at board corners, else very fine; a splendid, as-new copy.

This is an account of the psychedelic counter-culture centred around Timothy Leary and his fellow researchers at the Hitchcock estate at Millbrook, New York.
