"The more my scientific and personal understanding of human consciousness grows, the more impressed I become with the brilliance of Gurdjieff's practical and conceptual synthesis of the spiritual traditions of East and West into a form that speaks to modern Westerners. This introduction to his teachings by Dr. Speeth is exceptionally lucid, and I recommend it highly."
-- Charles T. Tart, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology University of California, Davis; author of States of Consciousness

"At last, a book on Gurdjieff which is for those of us who want to understand the power of the man and the extent of his teachings. Dr. Speeth's discussion of his ideas put them into a context which I can grasp without having to become a true believer. A genuinely useful book."
-- James Fadiman, Ph.D., Past President, Association for Transpersonal Psychology
co-author, Personality and Personal Growth, author of Essential Sufism,
Director, Institute for Noetic Sciences

ABOUT THE AUTHOR(S) / EDITOR(S) #
Kathleen Riordan Speeth was born into the Gurdjieff work. Early contact with Gurdjieff himself and with his close disciples oriented her life toward answering the perennial questions that were the focus of Gurdjieff's quest: Who am I? Why am I here? How can I be all that is possible for me? Seeking answers led her to a doctorate in Skinnerian behavioristics psychology, to practical educational applications of psychological principles, to training in Gestalt and other humanistic psychotherapies, and to studies in the Hindu, Buddhist, and Sufi traditions. Dr. Speeth is presently conducting therapeutic and meditations groups at SAT Institute in Berkeley and is a member of the faculty of Nyingma Institute and the California Institute of Transpersonal Psychology.
