I've smoked damiana on a number of occasions by this time (purchased at a pagan shop in Salem, MA) and I find it a calming and soothing aide in relaxation.
After the first hit I tried, the first time I experimented smoking damiana, I coughed like mad--it is a very harsh smoke--and felt a small cascade of tension fall away from my shoulders and neck. I polished off the bowl and found myself peaceful, slightly silly, but not high in the usual sense, as I get from cannabis. The mental effects are as mild as store-bought kava tea.
I tend to use it when my neck & shoulders are bothering me, I use a small water pipe with a fairly small bowl and by the time I've finished the bowl I feel much better: more relaxed, calmer, in both spirit and mind, and ready for winding down to sleep. I am an insomniac par excellence, so this is a wonderful match for me.
Although I don't get stoned, I wouldn't drive, or write a paper, or do anything that required focus after smoking this. I'm just too relaxed, and perhaps slightly dopey. My reaction time is slowed and my thoughts amble peaceably through my mind instead of the usual whirlwind.
For insomniacs, the chronically tense and anyone looking for a calming influence. Though I haven't tried, I think this would be lovely to enjoy while out in the woods or in any other natural setting. I am not always attuned to the plant itself when I smoke marijuana; with damiana I feel a connection to the plant and definitely feel a spiritual component to its effects.
