After doing some research on potential dream supplements, Calea zacatechichi was decided on as the first to investigate. I picked up some dried C. zacatechichi as well as a 5x extract from an online vendor. The extract can be made by soaking the plant material in vodka for a couple of days in a jar and then allowing for the alcohol to evaporate leaving only the plant material.

I decided to take the C. zacatechichi during the afternoon as most if not all of my lucid dreams occur from day naps. I started by packing a medium-sized bowl of the dried plant material into a pipe and smoked it. The taste although bitter, was not as bad as many have made it out to be and was actually an enjoyable experience. After smoking the bowl, mild relaxation began to set in and I noticed a subtle improvement in the clarity of my vision.

Everything seemed a little more vibrant and it appeared as though some objects emitted a faint glow.

I’ve read that for many people, smoking the C. zacatechichi had little to no effect on their actual dreams and so to be safe I measured out 150mg of 5x extract and packed them into two algae capsules which I took along with 200mg of 5-HTP. I then waited for 45 minutes before going to sleep, allowing the C. zacatechichi that I had taken orally to make its way into the bloodstream.

After two hours of straight napping, I woke up and was disappointed to find that I did not have any dreams at all. But as I lay in bed I slowly began to recall a very long, vibrant dream. It was much clearer then most of the dreams that I normally have and I was able to remember everything up to the smallest of details. Excited with this I went back to sleep with a strong intention of lucid dreaming in my mind. I awoke later, got a drink from the kitchen, went back to my room and happened to take a glance at the time on my computer. This sparked me to try a reality check and so I turned my gaze away for a couple of seconds before taking another look. I was shocked to see a different time on the screen and realized that I was actually dreaming. I woke up later with a stomach ache, feeling somewhat exhausted but happy that the C. zacatechichi had worked. I wouldn’t necessarily attribute the stomach ache to my consumption of C. zacatechichi but it definitely left me much more lethargic then I usually am after a nap.

Next time, I will try to take the 5-HTP at a much earlier time for naps as it has a tendency to delay REM sleep and concentrate it at the end of a sleep period. Overall, C. zacatechichi was a great success and I will definitely continue experimenting with it.
