I was visiting my girlfriend - sort of - we had broken up - but she said she'd see me this weekend. Pam suggested we do something different. Why not hitchhike to the beach? Sounded good to me. Being as it was 1969 and we were both young and not unattractive in our ways, it was fairly easy to get rides on Assateague Island. This was 40 years ago so some of the details are hazy.
This was 40 years ago so some of the details are hazy.
In about an hour I was lying on the beach unable to walk. Couldn’t talk very well. The only good thing I remember is how the sound of the ocean made me have a sense of eternity. This probably went on for hours. The next thing I remember is being given a ride by an older guy (meaning in his 30s) in a Mustang. I was babbling about witches and warlocks. I heard the driver say to Pam, “Do you know this guy very well?”
Later that night, in bed with Pam, somewhat recovered, we made love and Pam asked me to move in with her. This is a place where I had been working to get for almost a year. I remember saying this but I can’t tell you why. “No, I love Marcia. She is simple and sweet while you are much too complicated.” This is odd. I am 5’5’’ and small while Marcia is about 6’ and large. We had gone to high school together but she was now Pam’s friend. Once in a field, both of us stoned, Marcia had given me a hand job but that was a while back and never followed up on. I liked Marcia but loving her? Pam asked me to leave. It seemed like a good idea at the time.
Later on I decided this was not right and went back to see Pam. She wasn’t home. I went driving around looking for her. Something told me was in this apartment building. I parked and got out. I went walking, looking up at the apartment building at a lighted window that I thought she might be in. I went into what I thought was a parking lot. Suddenly there were flashing police lights. I jumped into these bushes. They were thorn bushes. The police patiently searched for me with their flashlights. They found me and arrested me. It was a used car lot and they thought that I was trying to steal a car. At the trial, they said they saw me tampering with a vehicle. A lie. However the prosecuting attorney had forgotten to get a statement from the owners of the used car lot that I had no permission to be there and a representative did not show up that day so the case was dismissed. Rightfully so for the wrong reasons. I am not and have never been interested in being a car thief. Explaining why I had been found by the police there could never have been explained coherently except to maybe other druggies. It was an interesting day but not a good one.
So maybe this was PCP or STP or BZ , I don’t know. It was definitely a bad trip. It took me years to get over this. There are still vague effects from this drug experience.
