Salvia and the Fire

I had kind of resolved in my mind to never take salvia. A majority of my friends who had tried it reported pretty unpleasant experiences and it didn't seem like something that would be good to try. But one day I was working with a friend of mine, and for some reason we got to talking about psychedelic drugs. He asked me about salvia, and I told him that I didn't know much about it other than the fact that it was still legal in our state. He expressed interest in trying it, and this surprised me because this guy was pretty straight-edge. Never drank, never even smoked weed. So the idea of him being open to having a psychedelic experience made me kind of excited. I agreed to try it with him as soon as I got my hands on some.

When I mentioned to some of my weed smoking buddies that I wanted to try salvia, most of them told me that they also wanted to try it, so I bought 1 gram of 10x extract and 1 gram of 15x extract at a local smoke shop. One thing that seemed to stick with me from all that I read about salvia was the fact that the effects only lasted about 10-20 minutes, and I was expecting a crazy but enjoyable trip, something like a really intense weed high. I couldn't have been more wrong.

The day of the trip, me and about 6 of my friends all got together and headed to this fire pit that we liked to hang out at. It's a big pit. I'm over 6 feet tall and my legs dangle when I sit in it. We decided not to light a fire, for obvious safety reasons. A friend brought his bong because we'd heard it was easier to smoke salvia out of a bong.

We all sat down at the edge of the pit and decided to take turns because none of us really knew what to expect. My first friend who tried it is very experienced psychedelically; he's taken 7 grams of mushrooms in one dose, something that I would never consider doing. He packed a big bowl of 15x and took a rip, killing the whole bowl in one hit. He proceeded to laugh uncontrollably for several minutes before staring silently at the sky. It looked like he was having a good time. The next guy packed a bowl of 15x and got pretty similar effects, except it was clearly more intense for him.

So when it got to be my turn, seeing how hard it was hitting my very experienced friends, I decided that I would be fine with the 10x. I packed a small bowl and took a hit. I started laughing and I had the feeling that my body was made of glass. This effect went away very quickly. I packed another small bowl and got similar effects. I finally decided that if I wanted the effects I was trying to achieve I would have to take a bigger doses. So I packed a considerably large bowl, and hit the bong. I started counting.

At the 25th second, I knew I was in for something weird. I was looking at my friends who were standing above me, and suddenly I didn't know who they were. My vision seemed to compress, for lack of a better word. It was like the world was becoming 2-dimensional. All the images in front of me started to rotate. The ground in the fire pit opened up beneath me, and I saw a giant staircase that unfolded into fire. All I could see below me was fire. I was terrified, and through sheer will I was able to come somewhat out of the trip. Everything returned to normal for a split second. Then suddenly I felt as though I were made of stone. I didn't remember how to speak. I just watched the events unfolding around me as though I were some sort of sentient building. I thought that I was part of the stone on the turret of a castle. I felt very rooted to the ground. As the effects started wearing off I looked to my friend who was next to me and I had the thought that if he touched me, I would be able to move. I told him, barely remembering how to speak, to give me a shove. He did, and I was able to get up and move around. For some reason I swore at him as I stumbled to my feet. Finally I started feeling normal again, but the skin on my upper body felt strangely sensitive to the shirt I was wearing, and I felt kind of itchy. It was about half an hour before I felt completely normal again.

This might sounds like fun, but it really wasn't. All of the things I was seeing and feeling were coupled with the sense that this was my existence, and I had no recollection of anything else at all.
All of the things I was seeing and feeling were coupled with the sense that this was my existence, and I had no recollection of anything else at all.
I didn't have any other conception of reality. And everything about the trip felt very negative, even though some of it might seem neutral from my description.

My somewhat scary experience paled in comparison to that of one of my friends. He took a hit of 15x after me. After a few minutes, an expression of absolute terror crept onto his face. He walked away, lost his sandal, and looked upwards looking even more scared than before. He rapidly collected his missing sandal, and bolted away. Worried about him, we all went to look for him and found him in his room lying on his bed. He told us that he had seen malevolent entities, and he knew that they wanted to hurt him. He swore never to take salvia again.

I'm not trying to scare others away from taking salvia. Some of my friends had enjoyable experiences with it. But my experience and the experience of my friend above stuck out most in my mind, because they were intensely negative in a way that other psychedelics don't seem to be except in extreme cases. It has the potential to be very unpleasant. I don't think I'll ever be trying it again.
