I began as a chronic pain patient and like so many others, the pain (mostly) went away after more than a year, but I continued to take 10mg Vicodin for two years (total). I was up to misusing my medication and had a VERY liberal prescribing/refilling doctor - which was ultimately bad for me. I decided to stop and was terrified of the withdrawal symptoms, as I had been taking between 12 to 15 10mg Norco per day.

I knew I was not getting another refill, so I did a 'test' run of the Gabapentin (aka Neurontin) about 5 days before end of tapering the narcotics. I have gone thru these kinds of W/D symptoms before and I was terrified.

I went 17 hours with no Vicodin and NO physical W/D symptoms during the test run. For five days, I tapered my dosage of the Vicodin - and took 600 mg of Gabapentin the night before I was to be totally off.

I woke up 12 hrs later and had some pretty shaky and typical w/d feelings, however, upon taking 600mg of Gabapentin, I was a WHOLE lot better. The first 24 hours off of Vicodin, my body felt extremely heavy and lethargy sort of set in, but there were ZERO OF THOSE HORRIBLE WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS. Absolutely NO skin crawling feeling, no 'cold zaps', no upset stomach, no chills, no sweating, no shaking at all.

I took smaller doses as the day progressed: 100-300 mg (depending on how I felt) during the day time and always took a healthier dose of 500-600mg before bed and upon waking. I am in a good mood, I am feeling that lazy, tired feeling and I can feel my body is definitely 'adjusting' to zero narcotics. Taking hot baths and naps, plus any benzos and/or muscle relaxers per directed by physician has also been helpful.

Gabapentin absolutely made 'kicking the habit' completely bearable and it is SO much less expensive than Suboxone therapy. This is an absolute miracle...none of the things that we addicts of opiates dread so much have been manifesting. I'm a smaller weight female, so my dosage is much less than some others posting about the wonder of this drug, but I was so amazed at how within 45 min or less ANY sign of w/d 'willies', chills, etc. were GONE. I am curled up on day 3 watching a lot of TV and resting, but if it weren't for the Gabapentin, I'd be in hell right now. It is totally 'do-able' with this amazing drug. Good luck!
