I was first prescribed Strattera during my senior year of high school...I was never one to eat breakfast, so the first morning after being prescribed it I popped one with a full glass of water.
I proceeded to spend 3-4 hours writhing with serious stomach pain and nausea...so I didn't touch the medication again for several months.
Eventually, I decided it was necessary and tried it again, this time, I ate it with food--virtually no problems relative to the first time. My initial prescription was for 60mg, and I was given a bottle of 25mg and 40mg pills from my doctor to 'ramp up.' After 2 weeks of ramping up and a week at my terminal dose, I noticed little to no difference in my attention span, so I discontinued use.
Then a few weeks later, when I was bored, I decided to read the information on the trial that comes inside the box.
Inside, I saw the dosing guidelines:
.8mg/kg is shown to have NO effect.
1.2mg/kg was shown to have an effect.
1.8mg/kg was shown to an effect, but no increase in performance but an increase in side effects!
...with my 140 pound body weight, my ideal dose was 76mg/day...I was taking just 10mg above the 'no effect' dose.
So, I went back to my doctor and asked her to prescribe me 2x40s a day, and she did. Lo and behold, 2-3 weeks later, Strattera was working like a charm.
