I acquired some 5-HTP recently, having been curious about it for some time. Two days ago, I decided to try it out. After researching, I decided to take 100 mg the first time to establish how a low dose would effect me. Within the first hour or so, I noticed that I was subtly more easygoing. I played a game of Scrabble with my mom (which usually is stressful for me, because we both tend to get stuck in a rut), and we both had a good time and didn't argue once.
At around two hours after the first dose, I took an additional 200mg. I didn't notice any effects beyond what I had already attained from the original dose.
Yesterday I took 300mg all at once at around 1:00 PM. I didn't experience any of the mood lift I had felt the night before and began to wonder if that was just a placebo effect.
I didn't experience any of the mood lift I had felt the night before and began to wonder if that was just a placebo effect.
Around 8:00 PM, I started to experience a significant stomach upset. (I had just finished a meal and at the time blamed my discomfort on that.) I was bloated and belched much more often than usual. The pain didn't go away when I went to bed, but it didn't affect my ability to fall asleep. I didn't notice much out of the ordinary regarding dreams. They were as vivid as is normal for me, and my level of cognisance wasn't any better than usual.
Today, as I write this, it's been 34 hours since the 300 mg dose. My stomach pain hasn't gone away at all. The bloating has started to subside a little, but the pain hasn't. If anything, it's gotten a bit worse. I did a search to see if 5-HTP could cause bloating, and I'm very certain that it's what's caused my problem.
I'll probably experiment with it again in about a week, but I'll be sticking to low doses, either the recommended 50 or the 100 mg that seemed to work for me without causing any upset.
If I'd known beforehand that a somewhat high dose of 5-HTP would affect me like this, I wouldn't have taken so much. I'm normally very careful about how much I take, regardless of what it is, but this time I underestimated the negative side effects of 5-HTP and paid the price.
