I was born and grew up on the English/Welsh border, in a small market town. Not being very affluent, I used to seek cheap or free methods of intoxication, and there was nothing finer than an autumn evening with friends and mushrooms. I can still vividly remember my first trip, even though it happened over 20 years ago.

At that time, inexperienced in gathering mushrooms, I resorted to buying some (dried) from a well-known local head, and that experience was in itself more than interesting. I met him in a car park, sat in his car while he took out a large bag of dried fungus, meticulously assembling a portable scales set and trying to find a weight light enough to balance what would eventually just about fill a standard size matchbox. I reckon that there were about 50 shrooms all together, and this ended up costing 50p, which I would say is equivalent to about £2.50 or $5 today.

A couple of days later, I decided that I would give them a go. I had heard much about them from the people I used to hang around with, especially the older ones, and there were no indications that I should have anything to fear. A couple of my friends were reading Carlos Castaneda at the time, and we were all talking about personal power and peyote all the time. One of them was also into Wicca, and would say that magic mushrooms were the local equivalent of the shamanic foods of the medicine men and Men of Knowledge about which we were reading. It might help me to finally see the 'aura' I had been trying so hard to find.

My friend Chris was with me, and the intention was that he would share the shrooms with me, but he changed his mind after trying just one. My cousin was also there, but he flatly refused to get involved. I can still see the chewed up, blackened little fungus that Chris spat into his hand. I ate the rest of the matchbox contents, and for the only time, I thought the taste to be kind of OK – a little bit smoky, and rather dry, but not totally unpalatable. Later, when tripping became almost a daily occurrence, I would be almost unable to eat them in this way, and would usually resort to tea. Occasionally, I would roll them up and swallow with water, a bit like pills, but even this sparked the gag reflex, and so I would avoid doing it if possible.

On this first trip, I knew to expect a delay before anything would happen, but apart from that, had no preconceptions about what exactly it was that might happen. We were sitting in my house, and started to get a little bit bored, so we decided that we would walk into town for a drink. I felt nothing on the 15 minute walk into town, and began to think that everything I’d heard about mushrooms had been overblown.

The first pub we went to was a very quiet old man’s pub – The Bear it was called – and it was virtually empty (as was usual on a midweek night) There was a Space Invaders game in there, and I started to fell a little manic, shouting at the guy who was playing, receiving a few looks from the punters, but not so bad as to get thrown out. Nonetheless, Chris and my cousin thought that we should leave for somewhere different.

By this time, my stomach was starting to feel odd, and I kept thinking that there was something in my mouth – a speck of mushroom, I thought – and my tongue kept chasing it around to no avail. There was also a strong mushroom taste in my mouth, and I was belching occasionally. I had only drunk one half pint of bitter at this stage.

We moved on to a pub called The Sun, favoured because it had a large upstairs pool room, which was unattended. Needless to say, all sorts of shenanigans took place in there. I felt OK as I went in, but I was itchy, and I felt as if I needed to urinate, but nothing would come. As soon as I started to play pool, everything changed. My breathing was incredibly clear and loud in my ears, I kept hearing whispered v [This report was submitted before it was completed -- if the author sees it please write in and submit the rest of the report]
