A couple weeks ago, I got a phone call from a friend: “X is dead.”

“What? Are you serious? What the f—k happened?!”

No response.

My close friend, X, ingested about an 1/8th oz of shrooms with others that night and in the midst of the experience “freaked out.” He grabbed a knife, cut open his throat, and then jumped from the balcony of the condominium he was in. X was declared dead the following morning.

Personally, I’ve experimented with shrooms in the past, and I’ve had a few bad trips. I’ve also seen people freak out. I know that before this incident I was guilty of having a rather cavalier attitude towards Psilocybin—I regarded it as the “least hardcore hallucinogen.” In the light of my friend’s death I am forced to regard shrooms and hallucinogens in a new light: They are dangerous. Flat out.

We can talk ‘til we are blue in the face about “subjective reality” and the value of reality altering substances, but please keep in mind that the reality we experience sober is the reality in which we are accountable.

My friend honestly was not depressed, and had no personal or family history of psychotic episodes. He must have been thinking and/or seeing such awful things to do what he did—and none of it was real. It breaks my heart just to think about.
