Not a Good Time
Sumatriptan
Citation:   ClusterFluck. "Not a Good Time: An Experience with Sumatriptan (exp117260)". Erowid.org. Aug 17, 2025. erowid.org/exp/117260

DOSE:
100 mg oral Sumatriptan (pill / tablet)
BODY WEIGHT: 165 lb
Mindset: Had a great day. Beautiful spring weather had me in a great mood. Comfortable environment with trusted loved one and emotional support pet.

I have been experiencing cluster headaches and read that “triptans” are often prescribed for this type of headache. After a day of brain-splitting pain, I asked my partner (who has migraines) if I could take one of his sumatriptans. Before I took it, I asked if he had ever experienced a head change with the meds. He said no. I was not looking for a high, I just wanted relief. I took one of his 100 mg tablets.

Onset was about 30 minutes. I first felt a pressure at the back-most top of my skull. Felt like my brain was being squeezed from inside my skull. It felt like the front of my neck was sweating, but it wasn’t. Next, immediate, awful anxiety. It felt like my fingers were vibrating.

I had started making dinner before this happened. My partner told me to go sit down, relax, and drink water while he finished making dinner. I thought my heart rate was close to 100bmp, but it was only 78. That’s about 18 beats higher than my resting heart rate, but not as high as it usually gets during an anxiety attack.

I started to think that I was going to have an aneurism or that there was something going on in my head that caused a bad reaction. Anxiety worsened. My nose felt funny, like I had been underwater and got water up my nose. Nose was slightly runny.

When my partner brought our food, I lost my appetite. At this point it had been about 40-minutes post ingestion. I had been hungry when I started making dinner. By the time it was ready, I couldn’t eat it.

After about two hours the anxiety and nausea went away. Skill experiencing a slight head change. As I write this, it’s been about 2.5 hours after ingestion. At this point, I’m very sleepy.

Overall, not a fun experience. I never want to take this medication again. Big mistake thinking it was a good idea to try it.
