This was my first and last time with "nangs", as N2O called here in Australia - not because it was a bad one, but simply that I feared some of the neurological damage I'd seen in some of my peers that had overused the compound. Alas, on this particular night, no such fear preoccupied me, and after a long night of clubbing with a group of friends in the city, we’d finally become set on retiring to kick on at our drug dealer friend’s apartment.

This guy, we’ll call him Greg, was a bit of a character, and the source for most of our substances that night. He had a bit of a ‘Scarface’ fantasy thing going on, being a 21 year old dude (the white kind though, his dad was some kind of business mogul), he wasn’t exactly the best trip sitter. Despite this, and against my best intuitions, I agreed to return to his for the night – at this time in my life I was feeling relatively adventurous, a little self-destructive, and more than a little experimental, I was excited by the prospects of his apartment and what compounds one may happen upon there. I knew these people from the most sober minded of this rag-tag group, the leftovers after a long night of clubbing, but as we’d all ingested 2-3 caps of MDMA sublingually, a good deal of alcohol, and some ketamine, we weren’t exactly keen on calling it a night. At this point, my ingestion of caps had me feeling elated, euphoric, social – and the alcohol and ketamine smoothed out the stimulating effect of the MD, leveling out to this trancelike wander. Sitting in this strange apartment, with these new people, talking to each person openly, it was really one of my favorite nights on MDMA.

So, as far as set and setting goes, this was relatively fine but still somewhat chaotic – I was with a bunch of people I’d really only just met, getting completely fucked up beyond all recognition, while being maniacally lectured by Greg about how to steal people’s credit card information via SQL injection (he frequently went on coke-induced rants that were mostly him saying whatever came to mind). After the group had dosed up each with a few more lines of ketamine and some Xanax to some good EDM tunes, our overall vibe was significantly more zombie-like, as we began to feel the weight of those compounds on our bodies and minds – we collapsed into giggling messes and decided that N2O would be a good point to tip the night off.

Now I’d never done this before but had seen it many times – I had some idea of what to expect from N2O, and have had its effects explained to me enthusiastically ad nauseum from its many proponents, but nothing could have prepared me for what the mixture of MDMA, Ketamine, alcohol, Xanax and N2O would do to my perception of reality, and time itself. I watched the device that we were administering with circle around the couch towards me, each person nodding out into a limbo state to the throb of the synth in the background. It finally reached me, I felt apprehension, exciting apprehension as my friend, Lilly, handed me the red balloon, filled with N2O – quite a big one as she wanted me to have a memorable trip. I exhaled everything I could in my lungs, grabbed it, holding it between my forefinger and thumb (remember this), and inhaled its entire contents in one huge pull. As soon as it was hitting my lungs I was feeling it, but by the time I had inhaled the last of it and held, every single thing in this packed, loud room was distorting and bending in upon one single point

, as if it were a singularity of some sort – but I specifically remember the sensation of hearing everything audible to me slowing down, in a very linear way – as if God himself were slowing down the audio of the universe exactly 10% every second or so.

Just as it was about to get so slow that it wouldn’t be intelligible, every voice and the music in the room began to distort as if ‘pixelating’ into a digital warble, I began to see swirling geometry, THIS was my first time seeing fractals and I was just in plain awe. It was as I’d ‘zoomed out’ of my soul and saw them shifting inward and into themselves, but logically, and beautifully, it was this canvas of synchronicity, math, and color. All I could hear was this overwhelming distorted hum, after reality had slowed down as much as it possibly could, the representation of time stopping all together - and as I stop freaking out that ‘I’m’ experiencing this, the fractals were all that I was aware of, nothing more. It had felt like I had been in this state for a while, but then I was distinctly aware of the audio speeding back up into an uproarious laughter (the people in the apartment), and one of the fractals expands into my actual visual field.

Here’s the crazy part: as I come back into reality after this nang, I become aware that I am currently exhaling that huge breath, and I look down to see the red balloon fall from my fingers to my legs. All of it had happened in between the space of my holding in the inhale, and exhaling.

I think the dissociative (ketamine) in a hearty dose, MDMA (probably cut with something, purity in Australia is very poor), and Xanax must’ve just cooked up this perfect combination of perceptive time dilation, but regardless it was a really memorable once off experience, and I intend on keeping it that way.
